Once again, the cries of the people have fallen upon deaf ears as legislators have opted to allow denial to overcome reason. They have reiterated the sickening truth that the people’s best interest is not of their concern. We remain solid in our exclamation: the time for action is long overdue.
It comes as no surprise that partisanship and deference to gun lobbyists fueled the immobility. Days ago, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) took the floor in a nearly 15-hour filibuster to attempt the unnerving task of rallying U.S. Senators behind common-sense gun control. To his disappointment, his colleagues failed him and the American people in failing to pass all four bills aimed at preventing future mass-shootings like the one in Orlando a little more than a week ago. “I’m mortified by today’s vote but I’m not surprised by it,” Murphy said Monday evening. “The NRA has a vice-like grip on this place.”
Votes like those that were cast today prove that no matter how detrimental a shooting is, Republicans turn a blind-eye to the reality that guns are far too accessible and their availability has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans. Young Democrats of Georgia joins with Democrats nationwide in demanding that legislative-action be taken to curb the continuing devastation guns and gun violence have had on our country. We also encourage Georgians to contact their legislators to make it known that the proper step in counteracting this epidemic is by saying ‘yea’ to reasonable gun control policies.
