In the early morning of Sunday, June 12, 2016, a safe haven for many became a horrific scene all too familiar to America. As a society, we mourn the lives lost. The opinions and hatred of one man took the lives of 49 people and wounded 53 others. We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ community in the face of violence and terror to ensure that the freedoms we all cherish are allowed to each individual, regardless of whom they choose to love. We are at a crossroads. As a country, we must allow ourselves time to grieve. However, Orlando joins a list of communities crippled by acts of violence. Mourning must develop into action. Our government can choose to take measures to prevent events such as this from occurring. As President Obama so eloquently put, we must “decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well.” The terror that unfolded in Orlando was not just an attack on the LGBTQ community. It was an attack on all of us.
