Statement on Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield’s Legislative Retirement

Today, upon her announcement that she will not seek re-election to the Georgia State House of Representatives, the Young Democrats of Georgia would like to take the opportunity to thank Representative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield for her years of public service and unwavering support of our organization. For many years, Rep. Benfield has been an unflinching advocate for all Georgians as a State Representative, and a party leader within the Democratic Party of Georgia. In this regard, she has fought for women’s rights, the environment, families, and young Georgians. In the next stage of her career, Rep. Benfield will continue her advocacy for the environment as the Executive Director of GreenLaw.

To honor our continuing partnership and friendship with Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, the Young Democrats of Georgia are pleased to announce that our organization will be honoring her with the “Honorary Young Democrat” award at this year’s Convention in the Mountains: Turning Georgia Blue from the Blue Ridge Mountains on April 14 in Hiawassee, GA.

Statement on the Passing of Senator Robert Brown

On behalf of the Young Democrats of Georgia, we would like to extend the deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Senator and Senate Democratic Leader Robert Brown, who passed away yesterday. Senator Brown has always been a great friend to Young Democrats throughout the state, and especially in his home of Bibb County. Senator Brown will be sorely missed, and our prayers go out to him and his family on this tragic occasion.

Join us as we participate in the upcoming Atlanta Pride Festival, the weekend of Oct. 8-9! We are looking for volunteers to work two hour shifts at our booth in Piedmont Park from 10am-7pm each day. We also need folks to march with us in the parade on Sunday, which begins lining up at 10:30am at the Marta Civic Center and rolls off at 1pm.

Please email two preferences for shifts at our booth and your availability to march with us in the parade to volunteer@georgiademocrat.org or stonewall@georgiayds.org. We will email you back with all the information that you need.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Officially Over

Today is a momentous day for the LGBT community. This morning at midnight, the 1993 Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy is officially over! Now, any brave American who wishes to serve his or her country can do so without fear of expressing who they are.

President Obama had this to say about the end of this oppressive legislation:

As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love. As of today, our armed forces will no longer lose the extraordinary skills and combat experience of so many gay and lesbian service members.

Young Democrats of Georgia President, Louis Elrod, echoed the President’s remarks with this statement:

The Young Democrats of Georgia are thrilled that DADT is no longer a policy of the Armed Forces of the United States of America. We would like to commend those brave men and women who served under this policy and join you as you look hopefully into a future where you are no longer asked to live without fully expressing who you are.

About the Petition

A few days ago, I read a story about Governor Nathan Deal’s appointment of Phil Kent to the Georgia Immigration Enforcement Board. After I talked to a number of friends, I realized that there were more than a few of us that were mighty miffed at Mr. Kent’s new governmental role. So I went onto SignOn.org and made this petition. My motive was simple. I wanted to prove that Georgians were paying attention– and cared– about the irresponsible actions that were being taken in the Governor’s Office.

In a few days, there were a couple hundred people that signed the petition, mainly friends of mine and other Facebook associates. Early on, Young Democrats of Georgia (full disclosure: I serve as the Executive Vice President) decided that it wanted to be a part of the grassroots movement, and signed on as a supporter.

Somewhere between then and now, something drastic happened. Georgians by the droves started flocking to the petition. When I was sitting in class yesterday morning, there were somewhere around 250 signatories. By the time I got out in the early afternoon, there was over 1,500. At this moment, the number is increasing from 3,350.

3,350 Georgias. 3,350 concerned citizens. 3,350 men and women who realize that we hold the future of the state in our own hands.

This petition was never about me. It’s not about Young Democrats of Georgia, either. It’s not about any singular organization or person who has signed the petition, and pledged their support toward the cause of removing Phil Kent from the Georgia Immigration Enforcement Board.

It’s about all of us, collectively, as a grassroots movement.

But the question has arisen: Where are we going from here?

By the day, more people and organizations are signing on to the petition as supporters; people who will see our mission through. We are building support, and gaining traction. We have gotten media coverage, and we’re not going to stop now. Once Georgians everywhere have spoken up, we’re going to go– together, as one– to Governor Deal’s office, and deliver him a list of thousands of signatures. Thousands of Georgians who are fired up, and paying attention.

We’re not going to let up until Governor Deal removes Phil Kent from the Immigration Enforcement Board. That’s where we’re going. Just some good ol’ fashioned grassroots activism.
